Awa Sport
AKA

The Kaiwhakahāere will facilitate a train the trainer’s programme where potential instructors will come to Whanganui and participate in three two day workshops that cover the history of  Aka then learn the components of delivering Aka. 

A video will be developed and  used by health and fitness enthusiasts plus Kapa Haka tutors and trainee instructors to aid their learning and teaching of others.  The video will also be offered widely within the region to whānau, hapū and iwi. Aka be taught as a competition conditioning tool for tutors. 

 

Aka will be implemented in participating schools with curriculum support

KAPA HAKA

Kapa Haka workshops will be facilitated for the Kapa Haka tutors of the region that will assist to build their skills and knowledge in the range of movements and taonga such as rakau, poi and patu that can be used to increase the fitness, cultural and performing ability of participants.    

 leading to a regional ‘Whānau Super 8 Kapa Haka Competition’ will bring together the culmination of the learnings and abilities.   

WAKA AMA

Historically Awa Sport ran regional Marae Waka challenges using 6 man Canadian canoes.  The introduction of Waka Ama to Whanganui has seen the establishment of a number of waka ama clubs on the Whanganui River.  It is hoped through this activity, opportunities for the rural communities to travel to Whanganui to participate and utilise the community assets.  The use of smaller craft will be encouraged on the Upper Whanganui and Rangitikei Rivers.

The community also boasts a large population of water sports through rowing, kayaking, canoe and even jet sprints.  Awa Sport will establish opportunities for Māori within this region to experience some of these wider water based activities.

KI O RAHI

Awa Sport are the Umbrella organisation for KI o Rahi ki Whanganui. Awa Sport Trust actively support the revitalisation of Ki o Rahi and other Takaro Tawhito within the wider Whanganui Rohe.

HE ORANGA POUTAMA

He Oranga Poutama (HOP), "Stairway to wellbeing", promotes the development and implementation of physical recreation and sport in a way that is culturally appropriate to Maori.
